Oxford County has the infrastructure, workforce and positive local attitude that encourages and supports entrepreneurship and a diverse economy based on natural resources, tourism, manufacturing and commercial development.  Norway Savings Bank, Dearborn Precision Tubular and Maine Machine Products are examples of businesses that started in Oxford County and continue to thrive and grow here.  Oxford County is also home to facilities owned by national and international companies, including NewPage Corp., Irving Forest Products Ltd, and Boyne Resorts (Sunday River).

One of our newest employers will be the Oxford Resort Casino (blackbearentertainment.com), the first casino in Maine, which will be located on Route 26 in Oxford.  Plans for the casino complex include a casino, two 200-room hotels, meeting space, a spa and parking garage.  It is anticipated that the casino will create 800 temporary construction jobs and at least 1600 permanent jobs for a total of 2,400 jobs.  When the casino complex is complete investors hope to be

• hosting over a million visitors every year,
• collecting $127 million in gambling revenues, and
• bringing in approximately $50 million in additional revenues to area businesses (e.g., restaurants, motels/hotels).

The casino will also attract more visitors to Maine.  Market studies show that the casino will attract at least 30 percent of its customers from outside Maine, thereby drawing new visitors to Maine.  There are discussions underway now to reactivate passenger rail service from Montreal through Oxford County and S. Paris and all the way to the Maine State Pier which could bring an additional 800,000 visitors to Maine each year and additional visitors to Oxford County.
