We found this absolute GEM in a historic hotel (now apartments but you can walk in and view the beautifully restored lobby). Brian’s, yup it could compete in Cambridge, Boston and even New York. Clean open kitchen design. I got a steak tip salad and my husband got a Caesar salad to start and ‘black and blue’ sirloin with Gorgonzola cheese sauce. Service was friendly but not hovering. Wine list if affordable. Fresh bread right out of their ovens came quickly to the table. Yum! My salad was perfect! Steak tips cooked exactly medium, lots of veggies and fresh blue cheese. My husband’s Caesar salad had fresh shaved parm on it. At one point before our meals came the waitress came over to say that his steak had been over cooked and the chef did not want to send it out so it would be a minute or two more. We really appreciated that! When we did get our meals, his steak was perfect. Oh and home made garlic mashed Yum!! So please, if you are up in this part of Maine, it is totally worth the trip. Brian’s Bistro opened in 2008 in downtown Rumford and has been a major attraction ever since. Located in the lobby of the old Hotel Harris, the interior of the Bistro was designed by Jess, a graduate of the textile-design program at Syracuse University, and is inviting and elegant at the same time.

Besides the ambience, Brian describes the menu as “fine dining without pretentions.” Brian, a graduate of the New England Culinary Institute, is the master of the menus. The lunch menu includes not just one but eight burger choices, including a Shanghai Burger with Asian BBQ sauce and Sriracha aioli. The Caesar Salad additions are equally extensive—chicken, shrimp, steak tips and salmon. Other lunch menu highlights include several choices of pasta, the Chef Specialties of Chicken Saltimbocca, Seafood Vongole with shrimp, scallops and baby clams on linguine, Amore and Buffalo Mac & Cheese. The Entrees feature several seafood dishes as well as Teriyaki Steak Tips and Sirloin Au Poivre for steak lovers. Brian’s pizza choices, like its burgers, are extensive and are enough to make your mouth water just reading about them—Buffalo Chicken with bleu cheese sauce and mozzarella, Caprese with artichokes and pesto sauce, and Potato Skin as well as Greek, to name only four of the seven pizzas.

On Wednesday evenings, the Bistro offers a half pound sirloin steak grilled to the customer’s liking, served with soup or salad as a side for only $15. Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4-7 pm is “Taps & Apps” where draft beers are $3 and Brian creates a special appetizer menu for only $5. It is a great way to get out, experience some variety, and get real value.

And, on Sunday, January 18, the Bistro will be offering a four course prix fix wine dinner. Sam Brown, the Sommelier from Pine State Beverage, will be featured. The cost of the dinner and tasting is $60 and the proceeds will benefit Holy Savior School. Make your reservation today!
